P’Git works as a security guard in front of Transit No. 8. He greeted me with a cheerful "Hello! Hello!" — followed immediately by his curiosity about the bicycle, then the inevitable question: where are you from? One look and he could already tell I wasn't from Chiang Mai. So I told him — Bangkok.
What followed was a good looooooong half hour.
He recommended a whole string of adventure spots worth pinning on the map. I've already made a mental note to follow in his footsteps someday — from the Mon Bridge in Sangkhlaburi all the way to Mae Kampong, Mae Chaem, a hot spring, and Bua Tong–Nam Phu Jet Si Waterfall (though he called it the Rainbow Waterfall, which sent me back to Google later to figure out exactly where that is), then Mae Taeng, rounding it all off with Huay Tueng Thao.
I tried to excuse myself several times, but he'd say — "Not yet, I'm not done talking!" — so I played the good visitor and kept listening as the travel routes kept coming...
I started quietly wondering if I was going to catch a second round of COVID from this man, because he was easily the person I'd spoken to the most all day — and spoken to with enthusiasm. His words came out with such energy, he mentioned himself that he was practically foaming at the mouth. I, on the other hand, kept trying to inch backward as discreetly as possible, while he followed right along, story after story. He guards the entrance — probably doesn't get many people to talk to. 😄
As we parted, he left me with this:
"If we're lucky, if fate brings us together again — I'll take you to Pai." 😂

กำลังคิดว่าถ้าติดโควิดรอบ 2 ก็มาจากแกนี่แหล่ะ เพราะคุยกะแกเยอะสุดละ แถมคุยซะมันส์ น้ำลายแตกฟองเชียว (แกพูดเอง) ไอ้เรารึก็พยายามถอยห่างที่สุด แต่แกก็ตามมาเล่าเรื่องให้ฟังติดๆ ...แกอยู่หน้าทางเข้า คงไม่ค่อยมีใครคุยด้วย 555

The moment he figured out I was from out of town — hadn't been here long — he shifted effortlessly into local guide mode.
Every interesting spot along the way, he pointed out without being asked. And as a parting gift, he threw in a clever shortcut to the airport that I never would have found on my own.
Some people just make a place feel a little more like home.
