Phi Lek and Phi Manoon walked me through the house themselves — a full tour with careful, detailed commentary. Along the way, an unexpected bonus: a whole thread of knowledge about growing plants.
Then, before leaving, the generosity began.
Phi Manoon gave two plants. Phi Lek gave one. And just as I was about to board the boat, Phi Lek's sister appeared — and gave one more.
Four plants carried home, heart quietly full.
Before the day was done, one plant found its way to a fellow researcher on the impromptu field team. Somehow that made everything feel even more right.
Some days you go out to gather data and come back with something you didn't expect to find.

Receiving New Year's Blessings from Mae Oui Saengda Somrit
This year, Grandma is no longer here.
So when Mae Uay Saengda offered her blessing — the kind that only an elder can give, carried in a voice that has lived long enough to mean it — something inside quietly broke open. The warmth was immediate and complete, even though we had never met before that moment.
Listening to her life story only deepened it. Whatever she has walked through, however many years she has carried — it became its own kind of courage to borrow from.
I felt certain, in that unhurried way that doesn't need explaining, that 2567 will be a good year. Because a blessing from someone like her doesn't land lightly.
May that blessing travel onward — to everyone reading this, wherever you are.
